The New Jersey Transit Police Department 2020 application process has been announced for Monday morning, February 24, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. via the PoliceApp.com online platform. Only the first 1,500 applications will be accepted, so the application period will likely close out very quickly. Candidates wishing to apply for the upcoming testing process should establish a PoliceApp.com online account in advance of the opening for the submission of applications. Likewise, it is important to have a digital copy of an updated resume, college transcript, and military DD-214 (if applicable) ready, as those documents must be uploaded at the time of the submission of the online application. Advanced planning is important, as any delay in submitting the online application once the portal opens may result in the candidate not being within the first 1,500 applicants.
Once the applications are submitted, candidates will be scheduled for a Physical Assessment on either Saturday, April 4, 2020 or Sunday, April 5, 2020. Those candidates who pass the physical assessment will then be invited to the written exam scheduled for either Saturday, April 18, 2020 or Sunday, April 19, 2020.
NJ Transit administers a written examination that is much different than the other entry-level police officer exams used in New Jersey. The IPMA-HR Public Safety Compass written abilities (cognitive) exam is much more difficult than the other exams with 50% to 60% of candidates commonly failing that type of test. While the NJ Transit PD process involves a pass/fail physical assessment followed by a pass/fail written exam to establish a general pool of candidates rather than a rank order list based on test score, it is considered a very challenging and competitive process. Proper exam preparation that focuses on skill development and skill enhancement is very important. Candidates who show up for this type of exam unprepared often find themselves caught off guard and struggle as a result.
